The link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease is substantial. For starters, most people with diabetes have other heart and blood vessel disease risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess weight. When coupled with the diabetes risk factor, the results can be deadly. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 65 percent of people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke.

If you're diagnosed with diabetes, you must take steps to manage your blood sugar and reduce your other controllable risk factors. You should discuss proper management of your diabetes with your primary care physician or endocrinologist. Some important steps you can take, include:

  • Regularly check your blood sugar
  • Maintain blood sugar levels within the recommended parameters
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Inquire about and utilize dieticians, diabetes nurses, diabetes classes, diabetes support groups and other support services available in your community
  • Report any health problems to your physician immediately (People with diabetes are considered immune system compromised and at higher risk for infections and circulatory problems. Plus, they generally have a more difficult time healing.)
