When plaque narrows the coronary arteries, the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygenated blood. When blood flow reduction is mild, you may only experience symptoms when active or under stress. Signs and symptoms include:
- Chest pressure
- Frequent heartburn
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Heavy sweating
Often symptoms are much more complicated than this short list. That's because men and women experience different symptoms of CAD, with women's signs often being less aggressive and difficult to pinpoint. Men's symptoms, on the other hand, are typically dramatic and progress quickly.
Women's symptoms of CAD
Post-menopausal women should pay special heed to these warning signs and not be quick to blame symptoms on stress.
- Slight discomfort in the chest
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Pain below the left shoulder blade or back
- Pain or tingling in the jaw, elbow, arm or throat
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness
- Angina
Men's symptoms of CAD
All men over age 40 should seek medical attention when they experience any of these symptoms.
- Sudden pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and then comes back
- Unexpected onset of rapid heartbeats
- Shortness of breath
- Fainting
- Sweating
