If you're diagnosed with coronary artery disease (CAD), your cardiologist will develop an individualized treatment plan. The components of your therapy, as well as the tests performed, will depend upon the extent and progression of your condition. You may also be diagnosed with a condition like high blood pressure or diabetes that affects your treatment. Your therapy plan may include:
- Elimination of tobacco products (i.e. Quit smoking and limit exposure to second-hand smoke.)
- Diet modifications (Low-fat diets can improve cholesterol, while low-sodium diets can improve blood pressure.)
- Exercise
- A weight loss plan
- A stress reduction plan
- Cardiac rehabilitation program
- Prescription medications to improve cholesterol, lower blood pressure, open the arteries, improve blood flow, reverse symptoms of angina, and more
- Diagnostic cardiac catheterization*
- Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (also know as angioplasty) and stenting*
- Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery (open-heart surgery)*
