If you're prescribed medication for your heart condition, taking this medication properly is crucial. To ensure that you're taking prescriptions safely and properly, follow these tips:
- Inform all of your physicians and specialists, as well as your pharmacist, of all medications you're taking, including over-the-counter-medicines, such as antacids, pain relievers, vitamins, etc.
- Take all medications exactly as prescribed in terms of timing and dosage. Never skip medications. Consider using a pillbox, an alarm clock or other reminder so you don't forget to take your medication.
- If you forget to take your medication, contact your pharmacist right away to learn if you should take or skip the missed dose.
- Learn why you are taking each medication, what it does for you, and what potential side affects you should be aware of. If you have questions, ask.
- Carry a list with you at all times that includes all medications, the dosage, the schedule and the diagnosis (This list is especially important to have when visiting your physician.)
- Ensure that your family and loved ones are familiar with your medication and medication schedule.
- Renew your prescriptions at least several days prior to running out. During hurricane season, keep a 30-day supply on hand.
- Don't share your prescriptions or take another person's medication, even if they have the same diagnosis.
- Keep your medications in their original containers in a cool, dry location that's out of the reach of small children.
