Preparation
The carotid arteries are located in the neck and carry oxygen-rich blood to the brain. This painless
ultrasound test examines the blood flow through the carotid arteries. Narrowing of the carotid arteries
has become a well recognized cause of stroke. Surgery to clear out the plaque can prevent a stroke.
Medications, such as aspirin therapy, are also important to prevent a stroke. Stenting of the
narrowed carotid artery is a novel non-surgical technique presently being developed. You do not
have to take any special preparations prior to the test.
Test
During this painless exam, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes, you'll lie on a bed or examination table
and be positioned so your head and neck don't move. The technician will apply a gel to your neck.
She'll then slide a tool called a transducer back and forth across your neck. The gel helps the
transducer slide and transmit sound waves. The test works by sending sound waves to the carotid
arteries. The waves reflect back allowing the technician to obtain images of the blood flow through
your arteries. If a partial or complete blockage is found, Dr. Moore will work with you to develop a
care plan to address the problem.
